An estimate of annual venture and growth-stage capital actually deployed into Chinese startups, as distinct from fund-level capital raised (see Total VC/PE Fundraising above).
Estimates of China's annual VC deployment vary meaningfully by source and methodology, reflecting differences in which deal sizes, sectors, and currencies are included. Independent trackers have put full-year deployment as low as $40.2 billion (2024, per PitchBook-aggregated reporting) and as high as the $70–105 billion range historically recorded at the 2018 peak, which is why this figure should be read as one credible estimate within a real range rather than a single, universally agreed number, a caveat that applies to most published China VC market-size statistics.
What matters more than the precise figure is the trend and its composition: deployment has fallen sharply from the 2018 peak, foreign participation in that deployment has fallen even faster (to roughly 8.5% of rounds by 2024, down from 18% in 2021), and the capital still being deployed is increasingly concentrated in state-priority sectors funded through RMB-denominated, often government-linked vehicles.
Methodology
Estimate based on aggregated disclosed deal data across industry trackers; treat as directionally accurate rather than a precise annual accounting, and always check the specific year and currency scope before comparing across sources.
